His body huge but very light, Hanumān runs from house to house. The city burns, the people are in distress, and the flames rise terribly. They cry out for father and mother, asking who will save them. They say they had said this was no monkey but a god in monkey form. The result of insulting a saint is that the city burns like one without a protector. In a moment the whole city burned; only Vibhīṣaṇa's house was spared. Śiva tells Girijā that the one who made fire as his messenger was not burnt by it. Turning Laṅkā upside down, Hanumān leapt into the sea. Girijā, the one who made fire was his messenger's master, and so the fire did not burn him. Turning Laṅkā over and over, he burnt it all, and then leapt into the middle of the sea.
