Chapter Twenty·Hanumān in Rāvaṇa's court·Verses 1–
Meghanāda strikes him with the Brahmā arrow. Hanumān falls, but as he falls he kills a great host. Meghanāda sees him fainted and binds him with the serpent noose. Śiva says to Bhavānī: the one whose name is chanted by wise men to cut the bonds of life, can his messenger be bound? He was bound only for the Lord's work. The demons run to see the monkey tied; for sport they all gather in the court. Hanumān goes to Rāvaṇa's court and sees a glory beyond words. Gods and the guardians of the directions stand before Rāvaṇa with folded hands, humble, frightened at a frown. Seeing this power, Hanumān has no fear in his mind, like Garuḍa among a crowd of snakes. Seeing him, Rāvaṇa laughed and spoke ill. Then he remembered his son's death, and sorrow rose in his heart.

Listen, Bhavānī: the one whose name wise men chant to cut the bonds of life, could his messenger come under a bond? For the Lord's work the monkey had himself bound.
