For a moment he vanishes, then appears again in many wicked forms. As many bears and monkeys as there are in Rāma's host, that many Rāvaṇas appear everywhere. The monkeys see countless ten-headed ones and the bears and monkeys flee here and there; the fleeing monkeys cannot keep steady and cry, 'Save us, Lakṣmaṇa, Raghubīra!' On all sides crores of Rāvaṇas run, roaring in a dreadful, hard and fearsome way. The gods are all afraid and flee: 'Give up hope of victory now, brothers; one ten-headed one conquered all the gods, and now he has become many; look for a mountain cave.' Brahmā, Śambhu and the wise sages who had known something of the Lord's greatness stay fearless, and know the Lord's power. The monkeys take the foes for real, and all the monkeys and bears waver and call, 'Save us, merciful one!' Hanumān, Aṅgada, Nīla and Nala, strong in the field, crush crores of Rāvaṇas, those sprouts of deceit. Seeing the gods and monkeys in distress, the Lord of Kosala laughed, set his Śārṅga bow and with one arrow struck down all the ten-headed ones.
