Chapter 79 · The armies meet · Verses 1–

Rāvaṇa's endless host of four arms marches out in many streams, with chariots, vehicles and banners of many colours. Herds of maddened elephants move like clouds driven by the monsoon wind. Troops of heralds and champions, skilled in war and in many illusions, go with them. The army looks wonderful, like a spring host of heroes arrayed; as it marches the elephants of the directions stumble, the ocean is stirred and mountains rock. Dust rises and hides the sun, the wind is stilled and the earth troubled. Drums and kettledrums sound like the clouds at the end of time. Horns, pipes and flutes play, and all the warriors roar like lions, each proclaiming his own strength. Rāvaṇa tells his warriors to trample the monkeys and bears, for he himself will kill the two princes, and sends the army forward. The monkeys hear and run up crying 'By Raghubīra!' The huge, fearful monkeys and bears run like Death, as if winged mountains were flying. Claws, teeth, rocks and great trees are their weapons, and they fear nothing; they praise Rāma's victory, and Rāvaṇa as a mad elephant and Rāma as a lion. On both sides they shout victory, find their match and fight, here praising Rāma, there Rāvaṇa.
