Mālyavān tells Rāvaṇa to give up enmity, return Vaidehī and worship the very loving Lord of mercy. His words strike like arrows, and Rāvaṇa tells him to go off with a blackened face, an unlucky man. He says Mālyavān is old, or he would have killed him, and tells him not to show him his eyes again. Mālyavān thinks that Rāvaṇa is the kind of man the Lord of mercy will kill, and goes away, murmuring. Then Meghanāda says angrily that his father will see his sport at dawn: he will do much, and how little does he say. Rāvaṇa takes heart from his son's words and seats him lovingly in his lap. While he thinks, dawn breaks, and the monkeys attack all four gates. They surround the hard fort, and a great uproar rises. The demons run up with many weapons and throw hill-peaks down from the fort. The chhand describes how the monkeys, though cut and bruised, hurl rocks back and kill demons wherever they stand. Hearing of this, Meghanāda comes and blocks the fort, and the hero comes down from the fort with drums sounding.

They threw down hill-peaks, and crores of missiles of every kind flew, roaring like thunderbolts, like clouds at the world's end. The terrible monkey warriors, though cut and bruised and their bodies broken, did not flinch. They seized rocks and hurled them on the fort and struck the demons dead wherever they stood.
