चौदह प्रानी
Aṅgada says that even if he did this it would bring no glory, for killing one who is already dead is no manliness. He lists fourteen kinds of beings who are dead while they live: a Kaula, one ruled by lust, a miser, a fool, one very poor, one with a bad name, one very old, one always ill, one always angry, one who turns from Viṣṇu, one who opposes the Vedas and saints, one who only feeds his body, a slanderer, and one who is a mine of sin. Thinking of this he will not kill Rāvaṇa, and tells him not to raise his anger. The demon lord, biting his lip, rubbing his hands, tells him he wants to die: his mouth is small and his words big. He asks on whose strength the fool bases his harsh talk, for the man has neither strength, glory, wisdom nor fire. His father exiled him, and he suffers the loss of his wife and fear of Rāvaṇa. In the dohā he says that Rāvaṇa's demons eat many such men day and night, and that Aṅgada should drop his stubbornness.अंगद कहते हैं कि ऐसा करूँ तो भी बड़ाई नहीं, क्योंकि मरे हुए को मारने में कोई मनुष्यता नहीं। वे चौदह प्रकार के प्राणी गिनाते हैं जो जीते हुए भी मुर्दे के समान हैं: कौल, कामवश, कंजूस, मूर्ख, अति दरिद्र, बदनाम, अति बूढ़ा, सदा रोगी, सदा क्रोधी, विष्णु से विमुख, वेद और सन्तों का विरोधी, केवल शरीर पालने वाला, निन्दक और पापों की खान। यह सोचकर वे रावण को नहीं मारते और कहते हैं कि अब मेरा क्रोध मत भड़का। निशाचरों का स्वामी क्रोध से होंठ और दाँत चबाता, हाथ मलता हुआ कहता है कि अरे अधम वानर, तू अब मरना चाहता है: तू छोटे मुँह से बड़ी बात करता है। जिसके बल पर जड़ वानर कठोर बकता है, उसमें न बल है, न प्रताप, न बुद्धि, न तेज। पिता ने उसे गुणहीन और मानहीन जानकर वनवास दे दिया, वह दुख, पत्नी का वियोग, और रात-दिन मेरा भय। दोहे में वह कहता है कि जिनके बल पर तू गर्व करता है, ऐसे अनेक मनुष्यों को निशाचर रात-दिन खाते हैं; अरे मूर्ख, हठ छोड़कर समझ।

'अरे नीच वानर, तू अब मरना चाहता है। छोटे मुँह से बड़ी बात कहता है। जड़ वानर, तू किसके बल पर कठोर बोलता है? उसमें न बल है, न प्रताप, न बुद्धि, न तेज।
'You low monkey, now you want to die. You speak big words from a small mouth. Stupid monkey, you talk harshly, trusting in whose strength? He has no strength, no glory, no wisdom and no fire.

दोहा ३१(क)दोहा 31(क)अगुन अमान जानि तेहि दीन्ह पिता बनबास।सो दुख अरु जुबती बिरह पुनि निसि दिन मम त्रास ॥ ३१(क) ॥
aguna amāna jāni tehi dīnha pitā banabāsa |so dukha aru jubatī biraha puni nisi dina mama trāsa ||

जिनके बल पर तू गर्व करता है, ऐसे अनेक मनुष्यों को निशाचर दिन-रात खाते हैं। अरे मूर्ख, हठ छोड़कर समझ।'
Men like those you boast of, in whose strength you take pride, are eaten by demons every day and night. Fool, understand and give up your stubbornness.'
