Vālī sets out with great pride and beats Sugrīva, who runs back to Rāma complaining. Rāma says the two brothers look so alike that he could not tell them apart. He touches Sugrīva, who becomes strong and free of pain, and puts a garland of flowers round his neck. The two fight again in many ways while Rāma watches from behind a tree. When Vālī begins to lose heart, Rāma draws his bow and strikes him in the chest.बालि बड़े अभिमान से निकलता है और सुग्रीव को मारता है; सुग्रीव भागकर राम के पास शिकायत करता है। राम कहते हैं कि तुम दोनों भाई एक जैसे दिखते हो, इसी भ्रम से मैंने बाण नहीं चलाया। वे सुग्रीव के शरीर को छूते हैं, वह वज्र जैसा हो जाता है और उसकी पीड़ा चली जाती है; फिर वे उसके गले में फूलों की माला डालते हैं। दोनों फिर कई प्रकार से लड़ते हैं और राम वृक्ष की ओट से देखते हैं। जब बालि हार मानने लगता है, तब राम धनुष तानकर उसकी छाती में बाण मारते हैं।

यह कहकर बड़ा अभिमानी बालि चल पड़ा; वह सुग्रीव को तिनके के समान समझता था। दोनों भिड़ गए। बालि ने बहुत धमकाया, घूँसा मारा और ज़ोर से गर्जना की।
Saying this, the very proud Vālī set out, thinking Sugrīva no more than a blade of grass. The two closed with each other. Vālī threatened loudly, struck with his fist, and roared with a great noise.

२2तब सुग्रीव बिकल होइ भागा। मुष्टि प्रहार बज्र सम लागा ॥मैं जो कहा रघुबीर कृपाला। बंधु न होइ मोर यह काला ॥

तब सुग्रीव व्याकुल होकर भाग आया; घूँसे की चोट वज्र जैसी लगी थी। 'कृपालु रघुवीर, मैंने आपसे कहा था न कि यह मेरा भाई नहीं, यह काल है?'
Then Sugrīva, in pain, ran away; the blow of the fist had struck like a thunderbolt. 'Kind Raghubīr, did I not tell you he is no brother of mine, he is Death himself?'

'You two brothers look exactly alike. In that confusion I did not shoot him.' He touched Sugrīva's body with his hand; the body became hard as a thunderbolt and all his pain was gone.

सुग्रीव के बहुत से छल और बल से बालि भयभीत होकर हृदय में हार मानने लगा। तब राम ने धनुष तानकर बालि की छाती के बीच में बाण मारा।
Vālī, faced with Sugrīva's many tricks and his strength, grew afraid and lost heart. Then Rāma drew his bow and shot Vālī in the middle of the chest.
