Chapter Twelve · Rāma's kindness; the camp on the hill · Verses 1–

The story-teller tells Umā that no one in the world is as good a friend as Rāma, for all others love for their own gain. Sugrīva, who lived in fear and pain, is made king, and Rāma teaches him how a king should rule. Rāma says he will not enter a city for fourteen years. Summer is over and the rains have come, so he will stay on a hill nearby, and tells Sugrīva to rule with Aṅgada and keep his task in mind. Rāma makes his home on Mount Pravarṣaṇa, where the gods had already prepared a cave.

Umā, in the whole world there is no well-wisher like Rāma — no teacher, father, mother, brother or master. This is the way of gods, men and sages: all love for their own gain.

Verse 2

Day and night Sugrīva had been tormented by fear of Vālī, his body covered in wounds and his chest burning with worry. That same Sugrīva Rāma made king of the monkeys. Raghubīr's nature is full of mercy.

Verse 3

Those who know this and still give up such a Lord — why should they not fall into a net of troubles? Then Rāma called Sugrīva and taught him at length the ways of a king.

Verse 4

The Lord said, 'Listen, Sugrīva, lord of monkeys. For fourteen years I will not go into a city. Summer is over and the rains have come. I will stay near, on the hill, under a roof of leaves.

Rule together with Aṅgada, and always keep my task in your heart.' When Sugrīva went back to his palace, Rāma made his home on the hill Pravarṣaṇa.

The gods had already made a lovely cave in the hill and kept it ready: 'Rāma, treasure of mercy, will come and stay here for some days.'
