Chapter 96·Mainā's grief at the groom's look·Verses 1–
The leaders of the welcome bring the procession in and give everyone a fine lodging. Mainā prepares a lucky āratī, and the women sing; she goes with a golden tray in her fine hand to welcome Hara, gladly. When she sees Rudra's dreadful dress, the women are filled with fear. They run into the house in terror, while Maheśa goes to the lodging. Mainā is deeply troubled; she takes the mountain's daughter to her lap with great love, her blue-lotus eyes full of tears: the Maker who gave you such beauty, how could he give you a mad, foolish husband? The tree of paradise should give fruit; why does the babool bear it? I will leap from the mountain with you, burn in fire, fall into the sea; let me go home, be shamed in the world, but I will not marry you off while I live. Seeing the women of the mountain in distress, all the women were troubled, and Mainā wept, lamenting and remembering her daughter's love.

With great love she sat her on her lap, her blue-lotus eyes brimming with tears: 'The Maker who gave you such a form, how did he make your groom a mad fool?

How did the Maker make a mad groom for you, who gave you such beauty? The fruit that should be for the tree of paradise falls by force on the babool. I would leap with you from the mountain, burn in fire, plunge into the sea; let my house go, let shame fall on me in the world, but while I live I will not marry you off.'
