बारात का आगमन
Hearing the procession was near, the city was in uproar and the beauty grew. Dressed up on many vehicles, the city's people went to welcome it with respect. Seeing the army of gods they were glad, and seeing Hari they were very glad; but when they began to look at Śiva's company, their mounts broke away and fled. The wise stayed with courage, but the children ran for their lives. At home their mothers and fathers asked, and they answered with shaking bodies: what can we say? the words won't come; it is a procession of Yama, or what? The groom is a madman riding a bull, with snakes, skulls and ash for ornament. His body is ash, snakes, skulls, naked, matted and terrible, with ghosts, spirits, goblins, female yogis, hideous-faced night-walkers; whoever lives to see this procession will be very fortunate, and will see Umā's wedding. The children told this from house to house.बारात को नगर के निकट आई सुनकर नगर में खलबली मची और शोभा बढ़ गई। नगर के लोग सजकर और अनेक वाहन सजाकर आदर से अगवानी लेने चले। देवताओं की सेना देखकर वे मन में प्रसन्न हुए और हरि को देखकर बहुत सुखी हुए; पर जब वे शिव के समाज को देखने लगे तो उनके वाहन बिदककर भाग निकले। समझदार धीरज धरकर वहीं रहे, पर बालक सब प्राण लेकर भागे। घर पहुँचने पर माता-पिता पूछते हैं तो वे भय से काँपते शरीर से कहते हैं: क्या कहें, बात कही नहीं जाती; यह यमराज की बारात है, या क्या? दूल्हा बावला है और बैल पर सवार है; साँप, कपाल और राख उसके आभूषण हैं। उसके शरीर पर राख है, साँप और कपाल हैं, वह नंगा, जटाधारी और भयंकर है; उसके साथ भूत, प्रेत, पिशाच, योगिनियाँ और भयानक मुख वाले राक्षस हैं। जो इस बारात को देखते हुए जीता रहेगा, उसका बड़ा पुण्य है और वही उमा का विवाह देखेगा; यही बात लड़कों ने घर-घर कही।

देवताओं की सेना देखकर वे मन में प्रसन्न हुए, और हरि को देखकर बहुत सुखी हुए। पर जब वे शिव का समाज देखने लगे तो उनके सब वाहन बिदककर भाग गए।

उसके शरीर पर राख है, साँप और कपाल हैं, वह नंगा, जटाधारी और भयंकर है। उसके साथ भूत, प्रेत, पिशाच, योगिनियाँ और भयानक मुख वाले राक्षस हैं। जो इस बारात को देखते हुए जीता रहेगा, उसका बड़ा पुण्य है और वही उमा का विवाह देखेगा।' घर-घर लड़कों ने यही बात कही।
His body is covered in ash, snakes and skulls; he is naked, matted and terrible. With him are ghosts, spirits, goblins, female yogis and night-walkers with dreadful faces. Whoever lives to see this procession will be very fortunate, and will see Umā's wedding.' This is what the children said from house to house.

महेश का सारा समाज समझकर माता-पिता मुस्कराए। उन्होंने बालकों को अनेक प्रकार से समझाया: 'निडर हो जाओ, डर की कोई बात नहीं।'
Understanding the whole company of Maheśa, the mothers and fathers smiled. They explained to the children in many ways: 'Do not fear, there is nothing to fear.'
