Hearing the sage's words and taking them as true, the parents are sorrowful, but Umā is glad. Even Nārada does not understand this difference in their moods. The friends, Girijā, the mountain and Mainā all have trembling bodies and tears in their eyes. Umā keeps in her heart the sage's words, which cannot be false. A love for Śiva's lotus feet springs up in her, but because the meeting seems hard, doubt arises. Seeing it is the wrong time, she hides her love and goes to sit in her friend's lap. The parents and the wise friends worry that the sage's word cannot be untrue. The mountain king, steadying himself, asks what can be done. The sage says what Brahmā has written on the forehead no one, god, demon, man, serpent or sage, can wipe out.मुनि की वाणी को सच जानकर माता-पिता को दुःख हुआ, पर उमा प्रसन्न हुईं। यह भेद नारद भी नहीं जान सके; भिन्न-भिन्न दशा को समझना कठिन है। सखियाँ, गिरिजा, पर्वतराज और मैना, सबके शरीर पुलकित और आँखों में जल भर आया। उमा ने देवर्षि की बात झूठ नहीं होगी, यह मानकर हृदय में रख ली। शिव के चरण-कमलों में स्नेह उमड़ा, पर मिलना कठिन लगा तो मन में संदेह हुआ। असमय जानकर उन्होंने प्रीति छिपा ली और जाकर सखी की गोद में बैठ गईं। देवर्षि की वाणी झूठ नहीं हो सकती, यह सोचकर माता-पिता और चतुर सखियाँ चिन्ता करने लगे। धीरज धरकर गिरिराज ने पूछा कि हे नाथ, कौन-सा उपाय करें। मुनीश्वर ने कहा कि विधाता ने जो ललाट पर लिखा है, उसे देवता, दानव, मनुष्य, नाग, मुनि कोई नहीं मिटा सकता।

Hearing the sage's words and believing them true, the husband and wife were grieved, but Umā was glad. Nārada too did not grasp this secret; each one's state of mind is hard to know.

सब सखियाँ, गिरिजा, पर्वत और मैना, सबका शरीर पुलकित हो गया और आँखों में जल भर आया। देवर्षि की वाणी झूठ नहीं हो सकती, यह मानकर उमा ने उसे हृदय में रख लिया।
All the friends, Girijā, the mountain and Mainā had thrilled bodies and eyes full of water. The words of the divine sage could not be false, and Umā kept them in her heart.

Love for the lotus feet of Śiva rose in her, but meeting him seemed hard and doubt came to her mind. Knowing it was the wrong time, she hid her love and went and sat in her friend's lap.
