Satī's heart was heavy with new worry every day: when would she cross the sea of sorrow? She had insulted Raghupati and thought her husband's word false. Fate had given her the fruit of it, and done what was right. 'Now, O Creator, it is not right to keep me alive apart from Śaṅkara.' She could not tell the pain in her heart, and the wise woman remembered Rāma in her mind. 'If the Lord is called merciful to the poor, and the Vedas sing of him as the one who takes away pain, then with joined hands I plead: let this body of mine be gone soon. If my love for Śiva's feet is true, and this vow in thought, word and deed is true,' the dohā ends, 'then, O all-seeing Lord, hear me: do quickly a thing by which death may come without effort, and this unbearable trouble go.' सती के हृदय में रोज़ नया बोझ भारी सोच था कि मैं दुख के सागर के पार कब जाऊँगी। उन्होंने रघुपति का अपमान किया था और पति के वचन को झूठा माना था। विधाता ने उसका फल दिया और जो उचित था वही किया। 'हे विधाता, अब यह उचित नहीं कि शंकर से विमुख होकर मुझे जीवित रखे।' हृदय की ग्लानि कही नहीं जा सकती थी, और चतुर सती ने मन में राम का स्मरण किया। 'यदि प्रभु दीनदयालु कहलाते हैं और वेद उन्हें दुख हरने वाला गाते हैं, तो मैं हाथ जोड़कर विनती करती हूँ कि मेरी यह देह शीघ्र छूट जाए। यदि मेरा शिव के चरणों में स्नेह है, और यह मन, कर्म और वचन से सत्य व्रत है,' तो दोहे में है, 'हे सर्वदर्शी प्रभु, सुनिए, वह उपाय शीघ्र कीजिए जिससे मरण बिना श्रम हो और यह असह्य विपत्ति मिट जाए।'
