Wherever she looked she saw as many Raghupatis as there were gods, each with his powers, and all the living and unmoving creatures of the world, of many kinds. The gods worshipped the Lord in many forms; but of Rāma's form she saw no second. She saw many Raghupatis, but never many forms of Sītā with them. It was the same Raghubara, the same Lakṣmaṇa, the same Sītā; seeing this Satī was greatly afraid. Her heart trembled, she lost awareness of her body, and she sat on the road with her eyes closed. When she opened them again, Dakṣa's daughter saw nothing there. Bowing her head again and again at Rāma's feet, she went to where the lord of the mountains was. The dohā says that when she came near Maheśa he asked with a smile how she was: how did she test him?
