In this way they bathe through all of Māgha, and then go each to his own hermitage. Every year there is great joy, and the crowds of sages bathe at Makara and go. Once, after the bath at Makara, all the lords of sages departed. The wise sage Yājñavalkya, a great knower, was held back by Bharadvāja, who clasped his feet. With respect he washed his lotus feet and seated him on a very clean seat. He worshipped him, praised his fame, and spoke in soft and very holy words. 'Lord, I have one great doubt. All the truth of the Vedas is in your hands. I feel fear and shame to say it, and if I do not it will be a great loss.' The dohā says: the saints, the Vedas, the Purāṇas and the sages all say that the judgement of the heart does not clear if one hides things from the guru.इस प्रकार पूरे माघ भर नहाते हैं और फिर सब अपने-अपने आश्रम चले जाते हैं। हर वर्ष बड़ा आनन्द होता है; मुनि-समूह मकर में नहाकर चले जाते हैं। एक बार मकर में नहाकर सब मुनीश्वर चले गए। परम विवेकी याज्ञवल्क्य मुनि को भरद्वाज ने चरण पकड़कर रोक लिया। आदर से उनके चरण-कमल धोए और बहुत पवित्र आसन पर बैठाया। पूजा करके और मुनि का सुयश कहकर वे बहुत पवित्र और कोमल वाणी में बोले, 'नाथ, मेरे मन में एक बड़ा संशय है। वेद का सारा तत्त्व आपके हाथ में है। उसे कहने में मुझे भय और लाज लगती है, और न कहूँ तो बड़ी हानि होगी।' दोहे में है कि संत, श्रुति, पुराण और मुनि ऐसी नीति कहते हैं कि गुरु से छिपाव करने पर हृदय में निर्मल विवेक नहीं होता।

Once, after the bath at Makara, all the lords of sages left for their hermitages. Bharadvāja kept back the very wise sage Yājñavalkya, holding his feet.
