Chapter 43·The water of the lake·Verses 1–
The poet's sorrow, plea and humility are the lovely lake's clear water, and its smallness is a lovely stream, not scant. The water is wondrous: hearing it does good, and drives away hope, thirst and the dirt of the mind. It feeds Rāma's love, takes off the faintness of the age's sin, dries up the weariness of worldly life, brings contentment, and wipes out sin, pain, poverty and fault. It destroys lust, anger, pride and delusion, and increases clear judgement and dispassion. Bathing and drinking it with respect takes the sin and pain from the heart. Those who have not washed in this water are cowards, ruined by the age. Seeing the sun's rays, the thirsty will wander like deer after the water of worldly life, in pain. In the first dohā the poet says that, having counted the good in the water as his wit allows and bathed his mind, he remembers Bhavānī and Śaṅkara and tells the lovely tale. In the second he says that now, with Raghupati's lotus feet in his heart and by his grace, he tells the lovely dialogue of the two great sages meeting.

My sorrow, plea and humility are the clean water of the lake, and its smallness is lovely, no small thing. The water is wonderful to hear of, and does good: it drives away hope, thirst and the dirt of the mind.
