Even in sleep his face shone very lovely, like a golden lotus at dusk. In house after house, women kept the night-watch, teasing one another with auspicious songs. The city and the night shone, and the queens said, 'Look, friend: the mother-in-law has taken the lovely brides to sleep with her, like serpents hiding the crest-jewel in their hearts.' At the holy hour of dawn the Lord woke, and the fine red-crested cocks began to crow. Bards and praise-singers sang virtues, and the people of the city came to the gate to greet. The brothers bowed to the bards, Brahmins, gods, guru, father and mothers and, getting blessings, were glad. The mothers looked at their faces lovingly, and they went with the king to the gate.
