Chapter 344·Avadh adorned for the return·Verses 1–
Drums are struck and fine drums, kettledrums and conches sound; horses and elephants roar; cymbals, horns, small drums and sweet shehnais play. Hearing the procession is coming, the people of the city are glad and thrilled. They decorate their houses, shops, roads, crossings and city gates. All the lanes are sprinkled with scented water and fine patterns drawn in the squares. The market, hung with arches, flags and canopies, cannot be told. Fruit-bearing betel nut, plantain and mango, and bakula, kadamba and tamāla trees are planted, with lovely jewelled basins at their roots; the lovely trees, touching the earth, bear fruit. Pots of many kinds of auspicious things are set in every house, and the gods, Brahmā and the rest, envy the city of Raghubara.
