The people of the city, hearing the procession will leave, ask one another in distress, and learning it is true, are crushed, like lotuses closing at dusk. At every place where the guests had stayed on the way, food of many kinds is made ready, fruits and sweets without number. Countless porters carry loads on buffaloes, and Janaka sends many fine things. A hundred thousand horses and twenty-five thousand chariots, all adorned from hoof to head; ten thousand elephants in rut, whose sight shames the elephants of the quarters; vehicles loaded with gold, cloth and jewels; cows, buffaloes and things of many kinds. Janaka gave a dowry too great to tell, such that the guardians of the worlds, seeing it, found their own worlds' wealth small.नगरवासियों ने सुना कि बारात जाएगी तो व्याकुल होकर आपस में बातें पूछने लगे। गमन की बात सच जानकर सब दुखी हुए, मानो साँझ को कमल सकुचा गए हों। रास्ते में जहाँ-जहाँ बराती ठहरे थे, वहाँ-वहाँ अनेक प्रकार की भोजन-सामग्री भेजी गई। तरह-तरह के मेवे और पकवान और भोजन का साज कहा नहीं जा सकता। जनक ने अपार कहारों से भैंसों पर लदवा-लदवाकर अनेक उत्तम वस्तुएँ भेजीं। एक लाख घोड़े, पच्चीस हज़ार रथ, सब नख से शिख तक सजे हुए। दस हज़ार मतवाले हाथी सजाए, जिन्हें देखकर दिशाओं के हाथी लजा जाते हैं। सोने, वस्त्र और मणियों से भर-भरकर सवारियाँ, दुधारू गायें, भैंसें और अनेक वस्तुएँ भेजीं। जनक ने फिर इतना दहेज दिया जो कहा नहीं जा सकता, जिसे देखकर लोकपति को अपने लोक की सम्पदा भी थोड़ी लगी।

The townsfolk heard the procession would go, and in distress asked one another. Learning that the going was true, they all grieved, like lotuses closing in the evening.

Wherever the guests had stayed on the way, food of every kind was made ready there. Fruit, sweets and dishes of many kinds — the preparations for the meals cannot be told.
