The procession gathers in front of King Daśaratha's palace with a great din of elephants, horse-neighs, chariot wheels and drums. The crowd is so thick that a stone thrown into it would not reach the ground but be ground to dust. Women watch from the rooftops holding lamps and auspicious plates, and sing sweet songs. Sumantra yokes two chariots as bright as the sun's horses. The king seats Vasiṣṭha in one and, remembering Śiva, his guru, Pārvatī and Gaṇeśa, climbs into the other.

Elephants roar and their bells ring terribly; the noise of chariots and the neighing of horses fills all sides. The drums beat so loud they put the thunder to shame, and no one can hear his own words or another's.

The crowd at the king's door is huge — a stone thrown into it would turn to dust. Women stand on the rooftops watching, with lamps and plates of auspicious things in their hands.

Both lovely chariots were brought to the king; even Sarasvatī could not describe them. One chariot was fitted out for the royal company, the other shone with a heap of brilliance.

The king happily had Vasiṣṭha mount that fine chariot. Then, remembering Śiva, his guru, Pārvatī and Gaṇeśa, he climbed into the other one himself.
