Chapter 295 · The queens hear the letter · Verses 1–

The king called the whole household and read Janaka's letter aloud, and told the rest of the story. Hearing the message everyone was glad. The queens bloomed with love like peahens hearing the clouds. The women elders blessed them gladly and the mothers were lost in joy. They took the dear letter from each other and pressed it to their hearts to cool their breasts. The king told again and again of the fame and deeds of Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa. Saying, 'It is the sage's grace,' he went to the door. Then the queens called Brahmins and gave gifts with joy; the Brahmins went away blessing. Beggars were called and given gifts in crores of ways, and they said, 'Long live the four sons of Daśaratha, the emperor.'
