Chapter 282·One string, nine virtues·Verses 1–
Rāma says the boy saw an axe, bow and arrow and, taking Paraśurāma for a warrior, grew angry; he knew the name but not the man and replied as his family nature led him. If Paraśurāma had come as a sage, the child would have placed the dust of his feet on his head. Forgive a mistake made unknowing; a Brahmin's heart should hold much mercy. How can they be compared, Lord, with one so great? Where is the foot and where the head? His own name is only the small 'Rāma'; Paraśurāma's is great, with the axe. One thing the bow has is a string; Paraśurāma has nine pure virtues. In every way they are defeated by him, so let him forgive his fault. Rāma said again and again 'sage' and 'best of Brahmins'. Paraśurāma answered angrily, with a laugh, 'You too are crooked like your brother.'

'Seeing the axe, arrow and bow in your hands, the boy grew angry thinking you a warrior. He knew your name but did not recognise you, and answered according to his family's nature.

How can you and I be equals, master? Tell me, where is the foot and where is the head? My name is only the small 'Rāma'; yours, with the axe, is the great Paraśurāma.

Lord, my bow has one string; you have nine most pure virtues. In every way we are defeated by you; forgive my fault, Brahmin.'
Explanation
Here 'guṇa' means both bowstring and virtue. The nine virtues of a Brahmin are calm, self-control, austerity, purity, forgiveness, straightness, knowledge, wisdom and faith.
