Chapter 250·The vow is announced; the kings fail·Verses 1–
The bards say that Śiva's bow is like Rāhu to the moon of the kings' arm-strength; it is heavy, hard and known to all. Rāvaṇa and Bāṇa, great warriors, saw it and quietly slipped away. Whoever breaks that bow today in this assembly will win Vaidehī and victory over the three worlds. Hearing the vow, the kings longed to try, and the proud among them were angry. They tied their belts, bowed to their chosen gods and went up. They seized the bow in a fury but could not lift it with any effort. Those with some sense did not go near it. The foolish ones went away in shame, as if the bow grew heavier on finding a warrior's strength.
