Chapter 248 · Sītā enters the arena · Verses 1–

Sītā went with her wise friends, who sang sweetly. She wore a new, lovely sari and her beauty was beyond measure. Her friends had fitted every ornament on her limb by limb. When she set foot in the arena, men and women were charmed. The gods beat drums, the apsarases rained flowers and sang, and the victory garland shone in her lotus hand. All the kings looked up at once, and she, startled, searched for Rāma; the kings were bewitched. She saw the two brothers near the sage, and her eyes yearned as if they had found a treasure. Overcome by shyness before her elders and the great assembly, she looked toward her friends, holding Rāma in her heart.
