Chapter 188·The gods become monkeys; Daśaratha·Verses 1–
The gods return to their homes, and the Earth too finds peace. Gladly and without delay they carry out Brahmā's order and take forest-dwelling bodies on earth, with matchless strength, armed with mountains, trees and nails. They fill the hills and forests, each in his own army, and watch for Hari's coming. Then the story turns to a part left out so far: Daśaratha, jewel of the Raghu line, king of Ayodhyā, bearer of righteousness, a store of virtues, wise and devoted to Viṣṇu. His queens, Kausalyā and the others, are pure in conduct, loyal to their husband and firm in love and humility at Hari's feet.

All the gods went to their own homes, and the Earth too, her mind at rest. Whatever order Brahmā had given, the gods carried it out gladly and without delay.

They took forest-dwelling bodies on earth, with matchless strength and glory. All those heroes, with mountains, trees and nails for weapons, steady in mind, watched for Hari's coming.

They filled the hills and forests everywhere, each living in his own lovely army. I have told all this pleasing account; now hear the part I left out in between.

In Ayodhyā there was a king, jewel of the Raghu line, known in the Vedas by the name Daśaratha. He bore the burden of righteousness, was a store of virtues and wise, with devotion in his heart and his mind on the bearer of the Śārṅga bow.
