The three brothers did many kinds of austerity, so fierce it cannot be told. Seeing their austerity, the Creator came to them: 'Ask a boon, dear ones, I am pleased.' Rāvaṇa, holding his feet, said, 'Hear me, Lord of the world: let us not die by anyone's killing, except for monkeys and men; those two classes we count as small.' 'So be it. You have done great austerity; I and the others together have given you that boon.' Then the Lord went to Kumbhakarṇa, and seeing him he was struck with wonder: 'If this wicked one eats every day, the whole world will be laid waste.' Sending Sarasvatī, he turned his mind, and he asked for six months of sleep. Then Brahmā went to Vibhīṣaṇa and said, 'Son, ask a boon.'
