He had no thought of any fruit in his heart; the king was wise and very capable. Whatever acts of dharma he did in mind and speech, he gave to Vāsudeva. Once the king mounted a fine horse and, making all ready for a hunt, went into the deep Vindhya forest and killed many sacred deer. Going about the wood the king saw a boar, as if Rāhu had swallowed the moon and hidden in the forest. The big moon could not fit in his mouth, as if he were angry and would not spit it out. The boar had fierce tusks and a huge, heavy body; he grunted, and the horse, seeing him, pricked his ears and looked startled. Seeing the huge boar, like the peak of a dark mountain, the king urged his horse quickly after him, but the horse's strength was not enough.राजा के हृदय में किसी फल की इच्छा नहीं थी; वह विवेकी और बड़ा सयाना था। वह मन, वाणी और कर्म से जो भी धर्म-कर्म करता था, सब वासुदेव को अर्पित करता था। एक बार राजा सजे हुए उत्तम घोड़े पर चढ़ा और शिकार का सब साज लेकर विंध्याचल के गहरे वन में गया, जहाँ उसने बहुत-से पवित्र मृग मारे। वन में फिरते हुए राजा ने एक वराह देखा, मानो राहु चन्द्रमा को निगलकर वन में छिप गया हो। बड़ा चन्द्रमा उसके मुँह में समाता नहीं, मानो क्रोध से वह उसे उगल नहीं रहा। उस वराह की भयंकर दाढ़ें थीं और उसका शरीर विशाल और भारी था; वह घुरघुराता था, और घोड़ा उसे देखकर कान उठाकर चकित देखता था। नील पर्वत के शिखर जैसे विशाल वराह को देखकर राजा ने घोड़े को चपेट दी और वह चल पड़ा, पर हाँकने से भी निबाह न हो सका।
