नारद का मोह
Seeing her beauty, the sage lost his detachment and gazed at her for a long time. Reading her marks, he was entranced, though he did not show his joy. Whoever marries her will be deathless, and no one will beat him in battle; all that moves and stays will serve the man she chooses. He kept all the signs in his heart and told the king something made up, calling the girl well-marked. Then Nārada left, worried. 'I must find a way that she will choose me. No prayer or penance helps in this moment. By what means can I win the girl? What is needed now is great beauty and a wide form, so that the princess is pleased when she sees it and puts the garland on me.'उस रूप को देखकर मुनि अपना वैराग्य भूल गए और बड़ी देर तक उसे निहारते रहे। उसके लक्षण देखकर वे मोहित हो गए, पर हृदय का हर्ष प्रकट नहीं किया। उन्होंने देखा कि जो इससे विवाह करेगा वह अमर होगा, रणभूमि में कोई उसे जीत न सकेगा, और शीलनिधि की कन्या जिसे वरेगी उसकी सब चर-अचर सेवा करेंगे। उन्होंने सब लक्षण हृदय में रख लिए और राजा से कुछ बनाकर बात कही; कन्या को सुलक्षणा बताकर नारद मन में चिन्ता लिए चले। वे सोचने लगे, 'मैं कोई ऐसा उपाय करूँ जिससे कुमारी मुझे ही वरे। जप-तप तो इस समय कुछ नहीं हो सकता; हे विधाता, यह कन्या किस प्रकार मिले? इस अवसर पर बहुत सुन्दर और विशाल रूप चाहिए, जिसे देखकर राजकुमारी रीझ जाए और जयमाल मुझे पहना दे।'

२2जो एहि बरइ अमर सोइ होई। समरभूमि तेहि जीत न कोई ॥सेवहिं सकल चराचर ताही। बरइ सीलनिधि कन्या जाही ॥
jo ehi barai amara soi hoī samarabhūmi tehi jīta na koī |sevahiṃ sakala carācara tāhī barai sīlanidhi kanyā jāhī ||

Whoever marries her will become deathless, and no one will beat him in battle. All that moves and stays will serve the man whom Śīlanidhi's daughter chooses.

३3लच्छन सब बिचारि उर राखे। कछुक बनाइ भूप सन भाषे ॥सुता सुलच्छन कहि नृप पाहीं। नारद चले सोच मन माहीं ॥

उसने सब लक्षण हृदय में रख लिए और राजा से कुछ बनाकर बात कही। कन्या को सुलक्षणा कहकर नारद मन में चिन्ता लिए चले गए।
He kept all the marks in his heart and told the king some made-up words. Calling the girl well-marked, Nārada left, worried in his mind.

४4करौं जाइ सोइ जतन बिचारी। जेहि प्रकार मोहि बरै कुमारी ॥जप तप कछु न होइ तेहि काला। हे बिधि मिलइ कवन बिधि बाला ॥
karauṃ jāi soi jatana bicārī jehi prakāra mohi barai kumārī |japa tapa kachu na hoi tehi kālā he bidhi milai kavana bidhi bālā ||

'मैं जाकर सोच-विचारकर ऐसा उपाय करूँ जिससे कुमारी मुझे वरे। इस समय जप-तप कुछ काम न आएगा; हे विधाता, यह कन्या मुझे किस प्रकार मिलेगी?'
'I must go and find a way, thinking it over, so that the girl chooses me. No prayer or penance will be of use at this moment. O Creator, how will I get the girl?'
