Chapter 81 · Leaving Ayodhyā · Verses 1–

Rāma explained all this to everyone, bowed to the teacher's feet, remembered Gaṇeśa, Gaurī and Śiva, took the blessing and left. At his going a great sorrow fell; the cry of grief in the city could not be borne. There were bad omens in Laṅkā, great sorrow in Ayodhyā, and in the world of the gods both joy and sorrow. The king woke from his faint and called Sumantra: Rāma has gone to the forest and my breath will not leave; what joy keeps it in my body? What grief can be harder than one for which a man gives up his life? Then he steadied himself and told Sumantra to take a chariot and go with the two princes. They are tender, he said, and so is Jānakī; get them into the chariot, show them the forest and bring them back in four days.

So Rāma explained to all, and with joy bowed his head at the teacher's lotus feet. Remembering Gaṇeśa, Gaurī and Girīśa, Raghurāī took the blessing and went.

When Rāma left, great sorrow fell. The cry of grief in the city could not be listened to. There were evil omens in Laṅkā, great sorrow in Ayodhyā, and in the world of the gods both gladness and grief.

The faint passed and the king woke. Calling Sumantra, he began: 'Rāma has gone to the forest and my breath still does not leave. For what joy does it stay in my body?

What pain could be harder than this, that a man should die of the sorrow he bears?' Then, steadying himself, the king said, 'Take a chariot and go with them, friend.
