Chapter 80·Rāma's farewell to the city·Verses 1–
Leaving the palace, Rāma stood at Vasiṣṭha's door and saw the people burning in the fire of parting. He spoke kindly and comforted them, then called the brahmans. He had the teacher grant them yearly allowances and satisfied the beggars with gifts, honour and friends with love. Then he called the maids and servants and, entrusting them to the teacher, spoke with folded hands: look after everyone as a father and mother would. Again and again, with hands joined, he spoke gently to all: whoever acts so that the king stays happy is my true well-wisher. Let the mothers not be sad in my absence; do that, you who are wise in the city.
