Sumitrā, a wise and kind mother, takes a firm hold of herself in this hard moment and speaks gently. She tells Lakṣmaṇa that Sītā is his mother and Rāma his father and friend in every way. Ayodhyā is wherever Rāma lives, as day is wherever the sun shines; if Sītā and Rāma go to the forest, there is nothing for him in Ayodhyā. The teacher, father, mother, brother, gods and master are all to be served as one's own life; but Rāma is dearer than life itself, and the friend of all without any gain for himself. Everyone who is worthy of honour is honoured for Rāma's sake. So go with them and take the gain of life.
