मागहु बिदा मातु सन जाई

Rāma tells Lakṣmaṇa to take leave of his mother and come quickly. Lakṣmaṇa is as glad as a blind man given sight, and falls at his mother's feet, though his mind is with Rāma and Jānakī. Sumitrā sees his face and asks, and Lakṣmaṇa tells her everything. At the harsh news she trembles like a doe seeing a forest fire all around. Lakṣmaṇa fears some new mischief and asks leave anxiously, unsure whether she will let him go. Sumitrā thinks of Rāma and Sītā's beauty and good nature, and the king's love, and beats her head, saying the wicked queen has played her trick. राम ने लक्ष्मण से कहा कि माँ से बिदा माँग आओ और शीघ्र वन चलो। लक्ष्मण ऐसे प्रसन्न हुए जैसे अंधे को आँखें मिल गई हों। वे माँ के चरणों में सिर नवाते हैं, पर मन राम-जानकी के साथ है। सुमित्रा ने उदास मन देखकर पूछा, लक्ष्मण ने सारी कथा कही। कठोर वचन सुनकर माता सहम गईं, जैसे चारों ओर आग से घिरी हिरनी। लक्ष्मण ने सोचा कि कोई अनर्थ होने वाला है और डरे हुए बिदा माँगते हैं। सुमित्रा ने राम-सीता के रूप, सुशील स्वभाव और राजा का स्नेह सोचकर माथा पीटा कि पापिनी ने चाल चल दी।
