Lakṣmaṇa says the counsel is good but it frightens him, since only strong and steady men can follow it. He is a child brought up on his Lord's love, and a swan cannot lift Mount Meru. He knows no teacher, father or mother, only Rāma. Every tie of love in the world, as the Vedas say, is for him in Rāma alone. Teach duty to those who want fame, wealth and heaven; but one who is devoted to his master's feet in thought, word and deed, would the Lord of mercy cast him off?
