Chapter 58 · Kausalyā looks at Sītā · Verses 1–

The mother-in-law blessed her in soft words, and seeing her so tender, was distressed. Sītā sat with her face bent down, thinking: the beauty and the pure love of her husband. My lord of life wishes to go to the forest; who is the fortunate one who will go with him? Will it be body and life, or life alone? The Creator's work cannot be understood. Her lovely toes drew lines on the earth, and her anklets, as the poet says, sounded sweetly, as if in love they begged that Sītā's feet should not leave them. Her lovely eyes shed tears. Seeing her, Rāma's mother said: Listen, dear, Sītā is very delicate and dear to her mother-in-law, father-in-law and household. Her father is Janaka, jewel of kings; her father-in-law is the sun of the sun's line; her husband is the moon of the sun's water-lily bed, a treasury of beauty and virtue.

With her lovely toenails she scratched lines on the ground, and her anklets sounded sweetly, as if, as the poet says, in love they begged that Sītā's feet not leave them.
