Chapter 51 · Rāma goes to his mother · Verses 1–

She gave no answer, red-faced and hard, like a hungry tigress looking at deer. Knowing her sickness incurable, they left her and went away, calling her dull-minded and unlucky. Even while ruling, fate has ruined her; she has done what no one else would. The men and women of the city cried in this way, and cursed her crooked act a crore times. They burned with a fierce fever and sighed: what hope of living is there without Rāma? In great distress the people were like water creatures when the water is drying. Full of grief, men and women followed; and Rāma went to his mother, face glad, heart glad four times over, free of worry that the king might keep him. Rāma's mind was like a young elephant fastened to a post by rule of kingship; hearing he could go to the forest was like being set loose, and his heart was glad.

She gave no answer, dry and red with unbearable rage, like a hungry tigress looking at deer. Knowing her sickness incurable, they left her and went away, saying, 'Dull-minded, unlucky one.'
