Chapter 35 · Kaikeyī's cold answer · Verses 1–

The king was in great distress, his body limp, like an elephant-cow struck down, a wish-tree felled. His throat was dry and no words came, like a fish without water. Again Kaikeyī spoke bitter, harsh words, like pouring poison into a wound: If at the end this was how you meant to act, why did you say ask, ask, and on what strength? Can two things be at one time, O king: laughing out loud and puffing out the cheeks, being called a giver and being mean? Can a man be a warrior and be safe and well? Give up your word, or hold your patience, and do not weep like a weak woman. The truthful has called body, wife, son, house, wealth and land as grass. Hearing her piercing words, the king said: You are not to blame; it is as if some demon has taken hold of you; Death calls itself mine.

The king was in great distress, all his limbs slack, like an elephant-cow felled, a wish-tree down. His throat was dry, no word came from his mouth, like a fish without water.

Again Kaikeyī spoke bitter, harsh words, as if pouring poison on a wound: 'If at the end this was your plan, why did you say 'ask, ask'? On whose strength did you say it?

Can two things be at once, O king: loud laughter and puffed cheeks? Being called a giver and being a miser? Can the soldier also be safe and well?

Verse 4
