Chapter 324·Bharata at Nandigrāma·Verses 1–
Bowing at the feet of Rāma's mother and the guru, and taking the Lord's sandals with leave, Bharata, steady bearer of dharma, makes a leaf hut at Nandigrāma and lives there. He wears matted hair on his head and bark clothing, digs the ground and prepares a bed of kuśa grass. In food, clothing, vessels, vows and rules he lovingly practices the hard dharma of a rishi. Ornaments, clothes and all pleasures and comforts he gives up, in mind, body and speech, like a straw. The kingdom of Ayodhyā would be envied by the king of gods, and hearing of Daśaratha's wealth Kubera is ashamed. In that city Bharata lives without attachment, like a bee in a garden of campaka flowers, which it does not touch. The luxuries of Ramā, the fortunate who love Rāma give up like something vomited. Bharata, a vessel of love for Rāma, is not great by this one deed: the cātaka is praised for its vow and the swan for its wealth of discernment.

Bharata, a vessel of Rāma's love, is not great by this deed alone: the cātaka is praised for its vow, and the swan for its wealth of discernment.
