Chapter 301·Bharata clasps his feet·Verses 1–
Bharata swears by the dust of Rāma's lotus feet, the lovely limit of truth, good deeds and happiness, that he is telling what is in his heart, waking, sleeping or dreaming. He says that loving service of the master by one's own nature, putting aside self-interest, deceit and the four fruits, is the only wish he has, and that nothing equals the service of a good master, which he asks the Lord to grant. Saying so, Bharata is overcome with love, his body thrilled and his eyes in tears, and he clasps the Lord's feet in distress. Rāma honors him with kind words and seats him by the hand. Hearing Bharata's request and seeing his nature, Rāma and the whole assembly are slack with love. The gods praise Bharata and rain flowers, but the mean Indra, seeing both companies wretched, still wants to gain by striking the already dead.

Rāma, the holy company, the sage and the lord of Mithilā, slack with love, praised in their minds the greatness of Bharata's brotherly love and devotion. The gods praised Bharata and rained flowers with soiled minds; hearing him, all the people, distraught, drew in on themselves like lotuses at the coming of night.
