As the people make their wishes, Sītā's mother sends her maids, and finding Kausalyā and the others at leisure, Janaka's royal women come. Kausalyā honors them and brings seats fit for the time. The gentleness and love on both sides would melt even a heart of thunderbolt. Thrilled, slack in body, eyes full of tears, they all sit scratching the ground with their nails, in thought. Each seems an image of Sītā's and Rāma's love, as if Pity herself had taken many forms to mourn. Sītā's mother says fate is perverse, for it carves with a chisel the froth on milk. We hear of nectar but see poison; crows, owls and cranes are everywhere, and the swan is seen only once in the Mānasa lake.

So they made all their wishes, and their loving words stole the heart. At that time Sītā's mother sent her maids; they saw a good moment and came.

The gentleness and love on both sides was such that even hearts hard as thunderbolts melt to see and hear it. Thrilled, slack-bodied, eyes full of tears, they all sat scratching the ground with their nails, brooding.
