Chapter 282 · Fate and karma · Verses 1–

Sumitrā says, anxious, that fate's course is very contrary and strange, and the creator who makes, keeps and destroys acts like a child at play. Kausalyā answers that no one is at fault: pain and pleasure, loss and gain come from karma, and the creator knows its hard course and gives all fruit, good and bad. God's command is on every head, in creation, keeping and ending, in poison and in nectar. To grieve in delusion is vain, since this creation is fixed and without beginning. Sītā's mother says that Kausalyā speaks truly, as the queen of Ayodhyā's king is the highest of the virtuous. Kausalyā says that Lakṣmaṇa, Rāma and Sītā going to the forest will end well, but she worries about Bharata.

Hearing this with worry, Queen Sumitrā said, 'Fate's course is very contrary and strange. The one who creates, keeps and then destroys, that creator's mind is as foolish as a child's play.'
