Chapter 231·A voice from the sky; Rāma on Bharata·Verses 1–
The world sinks in fear and a voice from the sky praises Lakṣmaṇa's strength: who can tell or know his power? Whether an act is proper or improper, it should be done only after thought; those who act rashly and then regret are not wise, the Vedas say. Hearing the gods, Lakṣmaṇa is abashed, and Rāma and Sītā honour him with respect. Rāma says: 'You have said good policy, dear one; the pride of kingship is the hardest of all. Kings grow drunk on it when they sip it, those who have never kept the company of the good. Listen, Lakṣmaṇa: a good man like Bharata is neither heard of nor seen in all of Brahmā's creation. Even on getting the seats of Brahmā, Viṣṇu and Śiva, Bharata would not feel the pride of kingship. Does a drop of sour gruel ever spoil the sea of milk?'

Whether a thing be improper or proper, let it be done after thinking; so all say. Those who act rashly and repent afterwards are not wise, say the Vedas.'
