Mantharā says: Rāma's mother is clever and deep; she found her moment and set her own matter right. She sent Bharata to his maternal home, and you must understand that was her plan. All her fellow-wives serve me well, she thinks, and Bharata's mother is proud of her husband's strength. Your trouble troubles Kausalyā, mother, but she is cunning and does not let it show. The king loves you above others, and a rival cannot bear that. Spreading a trick, she has won the king over, and had the auspicious time fixed for Rāma's anointing. This is fit in the family, to put the mark on Rāma, and it pleases everyone and me too. What I fear is what comes after, and let fate give that fruit back to her. Making up crores of crooked tales, she gave poisoned comfort, telling hundreds of stories of the rival that feed enmity.मंथरा ने कहा: राम की माता चतुर और गम्भीर है; उसने मौक़ा पाकर अपनी बात बना ली। भरत को ननिहाल भिजवा दिया, इसे आप राम की माता की ही सलाह जानिए। वह सोचती है कि मेरी सब सौतें मेरी अच्छी सेवा करती हैं, पर भरत की माँ पति के बल पर गर्व में है। आपका दुख कौसल्या को सालता है, माँ, पर वह कपट में चतुर है और ज़ाहिर नहीं होने देती। राजा का आप पर विशेष प्रेम है, और सौत का स्वभाव इसे देख नहीं सकता। उसने प्रपंच रचकर राजा को अपना बना लिया और राम के तिलक के लिए मुहूर्त निकलवा लिया। यह कुल के योग्य है कि राम को तिलक हो, सबको अच्छा लगता है और मुझे भी बहुत अच्छा। मुझे डर आगे की बात समझकर लगता है; दैव उसे ही उसका फल दे। करोड़ों कुटिल बातें रचकर उसने कपट-भरा उपदेश दिया और सौत की सैकड़ों कथाएँ कहीं जिनसे बैर बढ़े।

All her fellow-wives serve me well, she thinks, and she says Bharata's mother is proud of her husband's strength. Your pain pains Kausalyā, mother, but she is clever in tricks and does not let it be seen.

राजा का आप पर विशेष प्रेम है, और सौत का स्वभाव उसे देख नहीं सकता। उसने प्रपंच रचकर राजा को अपना बना लिया और राम के तिलक के लिए मुहूर्त निकलवा लिया।
The king has special love for you, and a rival cannot bear that. Spreading a trick, she has won the king over, and had the time fixed for Rāma's anointing.

कुल के योग्य है कि राम को तिलक हो; यह सबको भाता है और मुझे भी बहुत अच्छा लगता है। पर आगे की बात समझकर मुझे डर लगता है; दैव उसे ही उसका फल दे।'
It is proper in the family to put the mark on Rāma, and it pleases all, and me very much. But thinking of what comes after, I am afraid; let fate give that fruit back to her.'
