Chapter 179·The hardness of my heart·Verses 1–
Bharata says he is speaking the truth: a king should be a man of dharma. If they force the kingdom on him, the earth will sink to the nether world. Who is as much a house of sin as he, for whose sake Sītā and Rāma are in exile? The king gave Rāma the forest and, in parting from him, went to heaven. He, the fool, is the cause of all this misfortune, and sits and hears it all awake. Without seeing Raghuvīra's dwelling, his life stayed, bearing the ridicule of the world. Rāma is pure and dry to the taste of the senses; he himself is greedy for earth and hungry for pleasure. He asks how far he can tell the hardness of his heart, which has put the thunderbolt to shame. In the dohā he says the effect is harder than its cause, and it is not his fault: the thunderbolt is made of bone and iron comes from stone, and both are fierce and hard.

'I tell you the truth, and let all hear and believe it: a king should be a man of dharma. If you force the kingdom on me, the earth will go down to the nether world at once.
