Chapter 178 · Without Rāma all is vain · Verses 1–

Bharata says his good was to serve Sītā's husband, and his mother's crookedness took that away. He has thought it over and sees no other way to his good. What is the worth of a kingdom with all its sorrow, if he cannot see the feet of Lakṣmaṇa, Rāma and Sītā? He lists things that are vain: the burden of ornaments without clothes; renunciation without contemplation of Brahman; a sick body with many pleasures; chanting and yoga without devotion to Hari; a lovely body without life; and everything he has without Rāma. He asks for leave to go to Rāma, which is his good in a single stroke. He says they want him as king for his own good, but they speak this out of the dullness of love. In the dohā he says that they want happiness from the kingdom of a wretch like him, the son of Kaikeyī, crooked and shameless and hostile to Rāma.

'My good lay in serving the husband of Sītā, and that my mother's crookedness took away. I have thought it through in my mind: there is no other way to my good.

What is a kingdom, a gathering of sorrow, worth to me, if I cannot see the feet of Lakṣmaṇa, Rāma and Sītā? The burden of ornaments without clothes is vain, and renunciation without thought of Brahman is vain.

Verse 3

A sick body with many pleasures is vain. Without devotion to Hari, chanting and yoga are lost. A lovely body without life goes for nothing. Without Raghurāī all that I have is vain.

Verse 4
