The king's breath comes to his throat, like a snake without its jewel. All his senses are distressed like a lake of lotuses with no water. Kausalyā sees the king faint and knows in her heart that the sun of the Sun line has set. Holding back her own sorrow, Rāma's mother speaks words suited to the time. She asks him to think: parting from Rāma is a boundless ocean, he is the helmsman, Ayodhyā is the ship and all the dear travellers have boarded. If he holds courage, they will cross; otherwise the whole family will drown. If he will keep her plea in mind, Rāma, Lakṣmaṇa and Sītā will meet him again.
