Sumantra tells how at that moment the boatman rowed toward the other bank at Rāma's sign, and the jewel of the Raghus went on, while the minister stood there seeing it with a thunderbolt on his chest. He says he cannot tell his own distress: he came back alive with Rāma's message. With these words his speech stops, overcome by loss and shame. Hearing his son's words, the king falls to the ground with fierce burning in his heart. He writhes in bitter swoon, like fish struck by māñjā. All the queens weep and wail, a great calamity that cannot be told. Hearing their wailing, even sorrow felt sorrow, and patience lost its patience.
