Chapter 37·Spring and the pain of parting·Verses 1–
Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa leave that forest too, two lions of untold strength. The Lord grieves like a man parted from his love and talks with Lakṣmaṇa. He asks him to look at the forest's beauty, for it moves every heart. All the birds and deer are with their mates, as if scorning him. The deer run away at the sight of the two, but the does tell them to have no fear: those men have come looking for a golden deer. Elephants take their females along as if teaching him; a king, a woman and a well-thought scripture cannot be brought under control, however close they are kept. Spring seems lovely, but it frightens him without his beloved. Seeing him weak and alone with grief, Kāma has set up camp with bees and birds, as if he had stopped an army.

The two went on, leaving that forest too: two lions among men, of unmatched strength. The Lord, like a man parted from his love, was sad, and talked with many questions and answers.
Verse 2

'Look, Lakṣmaṇa, at the beauty of the forest. Whose heart would not be stirred to see it? All the herds of birds and deer are with their mates, as if they were scorning me.
Verse 3

When the herd of deer sees us, they run, and the does say, 'You have nothing to fear. Be glad, fawns of ours: these two have come looking for a golden deer.'
Verse 4

The elephants take the she-elephants along, as if they were teaching me. A well-considered scripture should be looked at again and again; one well served by a king cannot be counted as under your hold.
Verse 5

Even if a woman is kept in the heart, a young woman, scripture and a king do not remain in one's power. Look, brother, how lovely is spring; without my beloved it makes me afraid.

When his messenger had seen my brother with me and heard the news, Kāma stopped his army and, it seems, made camp.
