Rāma says he will explain briefly. Māyā is the thought of "I", "mine" and "yours", and it holds all creatures in its power. Whatever the mind can reach through the senses is māyā. It has two sides, vidyā and avidyā. One is wicked and full of sorrow, and the soul that falls under it drops into the well of worldly life. The other makes the world through the qualities, and does not work by its own power, only as the Lord moves it. Knowledge is where there is no pride and no ego, and he sees Brahman the same in all. He is the true man of detachment, who counts the powers of the three qualities as straw. One who does not know himself or God is the soul. The Lord is beyond all, the giver of bondage and release, and the mover of māyā.

'Brother, I will explain it all in a few words; listen with your mind and heart fixed on me. This 'I', 'mine' and 'yours' is māyā, which has brought the whole host of creatures under its power.
Verse 2

One is very wicked and full of sorrow; under its power the soul has fallen into the well of the world. The other makes the world by the qualities, but it does not work by its own strength, only as the Lord sends it.
Verse 4

Where there is no pride of knowledge and not one thing of ego, who sees Brahman equal in all: say, brother, that man is the highest in detachment, who counts the powers of the three qualities as straw and gives them up.

The one who does not know God and does not know himself, say he is the soul. The one who is above all, who gives bondage and release, and who moves māyā, is God.

Avidyā binds, vidyā leads to freedom; both belong to the realm of māyā.
