Chapter Thirteen · The Field and the Knower of the Field · Verses 0–34

The last six chapters of the Gītā turn from devotion to the knowledge that frees. This one draws the basic line on which the rest depends: everything that can be known, the body, the senses, the mind and even the sense of "I", is the field; the one who knows it is the knower of the field. Kṛṣṇa says he himself is the knower in every field, and that true knowledge is knowing the two apart. He lists the twenty-four elements of the field and its changes: desire, aversion, pleasure, pain and the rest. Then, surprisingly, he defines "knowledge" not as a doctrine but as a set of qualities: humility, lack of pretence, non-violence, patience, straightness, service of the teacher, purity, steadiness, self-control, detachment, seeing the pain of birth, death, age and disease, freedom from clinging to children, wife and home, evenness in good and bad fortune, single-minded devotion, love of solitude, and constant attention to the Self. What is contrary to these is ignorance. Next comes the object of knowledge, the beginningless supreme Brahman, which is neither being nor non-being: it has hands and feet everywhere yet no senses, it is inside and outside all beings, far and near, undivided yet seeming divided. The second half names the same pair as prakṛti and puruṣa, nature and spirit. Nature does all the acting; spirit, seated in nature, experiences its qualities and so is born again and again. The highest spirit in the body is the witness, the one who allows, the supporter, the great Lord. Some see the Self by meditation, some by knowledge, some by action, some simply by hearing from others with faith. Whoever sees the Lord equal in all beings, undying among the dying, and sees that nature alone acts while the Self does nothing, truly sees. Like space, which is everywhere and stained by nothing, the Self in the body is not stained; like the one sun lighting the whole world, the knower lights the whole field.

Nature and spirit, the field and the knower of the field, knowledge and what is to be known: this is what I wish to know, O Keśava.

Explanation

This question is missing in many copies of the Gītā, where the chapter opens with the next verse. It names in advance the six topics the chapter answers.

This body, O son of Kuntī, is called the field. The one who knows it is called the knower of the field by those who know both.

Explanation

The body is a field because the seeds of action sown in it bear their fruit there. Whatever is seen or known is field; the one who sees and knows is not part of it.

Know me also as the knower of the field in all fields, O Bhārata. Knowledge of the field and its knower: that, I hold, is knowledge.

Explanation

Some read this as saying the knower in every body is the one Lord himself, so that the individual knower is not finally other than him; others read it as saying the Lord dwells in every field as the inner knower alongside the individual soul, which remains distinct and depends on him.

I shall tell you what is to be known, knowing which one gains immortality. It is the beginningless supreme Brahman. It is called neither being nor non-being.

Explanation

For seeing the Lord present equally everywhere, he does not harm himself by himself. Therefore he goes to the highest goal.

Explanation

To forget the Self and take oneself to be the body is to kill oneself over and over, through birth after birth. The one who sees the Lord everywhere stops doing this.

Those who, with the eye of knowledge, know thus the difference between the field and its knower, and the way to freedom from the nature of beings, go to the Supreme.

Explanation

"The nature of beings" is prakṛti, the material cause from which all bodies arise; some understand it as ignorance itself. Knowing the difference is the way out of it.
