Anagha Lakshmi Tarpan Vidhi — Pacifying a Restless Deceased Female Ancestor

The speaker says it is said that Lord Dattatreya is a combined form of Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh gathered into three principal forms, in whom all powers reside. His Mahayoga Shakti — his VamangiA householder's wife, understood as a manifestation of the Divine Feminine seated on the left side (Vama) of the husband — the basis for sleeping beside one's spouse incurring no ritual flaw. (left-half consort) power — is Bhagwati Anagha Lakshmi. He says that if one is doing 100 mala of any Dattatreya mantra, reciting the 101 names of Bhagwati Anagha Lakshmi alongside it brings her special grace. He adds that whenever any Mahashakti is worshipped, her paired form (yugal shakti) must also be worshipped, so worshipping Dattatreya's form together with archana of Anagha Lakshmi's 101 names is especially auspicious.

The speaker describes one further special vidhan, which he calls a great boon for sadhaks who worship Lord Dattatreya, though he says anyone may use it in general too. A silver beej is made of Shri, which is Bhagwati Lakshmi's beej akshar. In the Margashirsha month, once Dattatreya Jayanti is complete, the Ashtami that follows is when the Anagha Lakshmi Ashtami vrat is observed. On that Anagha Lakshmi Ashtami day — and, especially during a time of crisis, on any Krishna Paksha Ashtami — the silver beej is placed on a plate, treated as Bhagwati's own form, and worshipped on top with kumkum through these names. After the archana, aarti is shown to it, and it is then kept at the place in the home where money is stored.

The speaker says that every day starting from that Krishna Paksha Ashtami, the beej should be brought back from the place where money is kept to the puja place, and worshipped again with kumkum — either 108 times, or through the 101 mantras — before being carried back and kept at the money-storage place once more. Red and yellow flowers, he says, must always be offered to it. Following this practice, he says, brings Bhagwati's special grace, particularly for money-related problems.

The speaker turns to explaining how this tarpan vidhan should be done. He says TarpanaA libation offering of water or other substances made to a deity or ancestor, typically performed alongside Havan and Marjan. becomes especially necessary at a time when any kind of special problem connected to the Pitr arises, or when vaishachik (spirit-related) problems present themselves — at such a time, the seva, puja and anushthan of Lord Dattatreya are very effective.

The speaker notes this issue is seen especially in regions of Rajasthan, where such a spirit is called Pitrani, though he adds that the problem can arise anywhere — it is only that people in those regions are more attentive to it. If a woman in the household has died — especially an Akala Mrityu (untimely death) — and is troubling the family a great deal, whatever form she may have taken, whether one calls her Pitrani or Dakini, and a dosha connected to her is present, the speaker says Bhagwati's 101 names are what is used for this.

The speaker says the TarpanaA libation offering of water or other substances made to a deity or ancestor, typically performed alongside Havan and Marjan. with Bhagwati's 101 names is done using Ganga water, poured onto the trunk or wood of a Bel tree — either standing at the tree or sitting beneath it. He specifies the tree must be a worshipped one; it should not stand in an isolated (nirjan) place. The materials needed: a brass lota filled with water, into which a little honey is added, along with a betel leaf (PeepalA sacred fig tree dedicated to Lord Dattatreya — Pitru Tarpan performed beneath it calms agitated ancestral spirits causing domestic unrest. leaf can also be used, but he says the betel leaf, paan patta, suits Bhagwati's form best).

The speaker says three betel leaves are taken, their stems (dandal) broken off but not the tip, held together, and used for the TarpanaA libation offering of water or other substances made to a deity or ancestor, typically performed alongside Havan and Marjan. on the Bel tree with each of Bhagwati's names. Before this, a SankalpaA formal ritual resolution spoken aloud before an offering or observance, declaring its intent and dedicating its merit. for the purpose is taken, and a ghee lamp is lit and placed atop flowers — never directly on the bare ground. While doing so, one states: this household member who suffered an Akala Mrityu was in female form — the remedy is specifically for a woman who died in this way. The prayer continues: she who has died is now troubling us; O Bhagwati, please pacify and calm her, and grant us the strength (samarthya) that we may arrange Narayana Bali on her behalf and secure her sadgati, so that she too attains mukti.

The speaker gives an example: a person reported that his mother had been murdered, and she now troubles the family a great deal, while they presently lack the means to arrange Narayana Bali. In such a situation, he says, this tarpan is the option to use. He says that quite soon — within three to four days, and certainly by the time a full week passes — the intensity of whichever shakti has been troubling the family calms down; it no longer carries the same fierceness. If small children in particular are being troubled and facing a lot of difficulty, he says this remedy can be used for that too.

The speaker gives the first mantra as an example: Shri Anaghaya Namah. He clarifies that the Pranav (Om) should be used only by those who have taken YajnopavitaThe sacred thread ceremony marking initiation into Vedic rites (Janeu) — if lapsed across generations, expiation (Prayashchitta) for each known generation is required before it can be resumed. (the sacred thread); everyone else should use 'Shri' in its place, giving Shri Anaghaya Namah. The speaker says that if the Bel tree used is one present within a temple, that is the very best; he repeats that it must never be one standing in an isolated (nirjan) place. A tree that is regularly worshipped, he says, gives the best result, and this practice brings peace to the family that uses it.

The speaker addresses a further situation: a girl anywhere between roughly three and thirteen years of age, who may already have reached puberty (rajasvala) before her death, has died an untimely death and is troubling the family a great deal, and yet no sadhak capable of securing her gati has been found, or the family does not have the financial means to arrange special rites at Ganga, Prayag, Kashi or Gaya. In such a situation, he says, this tarpan — through these forms of Bhagwati and these mantras, performed on the Bel tree — can be used to calm her and bring her peace.

He adds that visible relief typically begins from around the seventh day, but one should not give it up at that point — it should be continued until the spirit is fully and completely calmed.

The speaker adds that, besides this, an option using Kali worship (with a single lamp) also exists, but cautions that performing both together at the same time causes far too much intensity (ugrata) and should be avoided. He notes that this remedy is often useful as well for parents whose unborn child was lost during pregnancy, or whose child died an untimely death — such mothers and fathers suffer greatly, and they too can make use of this practice.
