Vindhyeshwari Stotram — I worship the Goddess who dwells in the Vindhyas
Verses 8, pañcacāmara metre

Each verse of this hymn lists what the Goddess does, in a run of long -inī endings, and then returns to one line: bhajāmi vindhyavāsinīm, I worship her who dwells in the Vindhyas. She is the slayer of Śumbha and Niśumbha, the splitter of fierce Muṇḍa, the one in forest and battle, the one in every house, the one who removes poverty and grief. She is Durga as worshipped at the Vindhya hills, see also Vindhyavasini.

निशुम्भशुम्भमर्दिनीं प्रचण्डमुण्डखण्डिनीम् ।
वने रणे प्रकाशिनीं भजामि विन्ध्यवासिनीम् ॥ १ ॥

English sense

She crushes Niśumbha and Śumbha and splits the fierce Muṇḍa. She shines in the forest and in battle. I worship her who dwells in the Vindhyas.

Variant reading निशुम्भ शुम्भ गर्जनी, प्रचण्ड मुण्ड खण्डिनी (She roars at Niśumbha and Śumbha; she splits the fierce Muṇḍa). This is how the first verse is often sung in its Hindi-shaped version.

Variant reading त्रिशूलरत्नधारिणीं (who bears the trident and jewels). Another copy of the hymn has "jewels" in place of "skull".
